Alternative entry

Alternative entry schemes allow you to be considered for entry to UWA if your results in one of our standard entry pathways are not sufficient for you to gain admission to a course.

These pathways apply only to Australian students.

  1. UWay
  2. Indigenous students
  3. Mature-Age Access Program
  4. Broadway UWA
  5. Fairway UWA
  6. Special consideration

UWay

You can apply for special entry to an undergraduate degree course through UWay if you are a WACE (or interstate equivalent) student, including mature-age WACE students, whose academic achievements have been adversely affected by certain disadvantages.

Check out how UWay works, how to apply and application deadlines.

The disadvantages include:

  • rural isolation
  • lack of a supportive study environment at home
  • having to care for family members
  • having to engage in excessive part-time employment to help with the family income
  • disruption of education due to frequent family relocation or difficult migrant passage
  • a period of illness, now over or abating
  • bereavement.

Deadlines

UWay application forms are sent to all WA secondary school principals in August.

UWay applications close at the end of September.

Indigenous Students

The School of Indigenous Studies provides opportunities to study at the University for Indigenous applicants with a wide variety of educational backgrounds who do not meet the standard admission requirements outlined above.

Provisional Entry Scheme

The Provisional Entry Scheme makes a number of places available to Indigenous students who have completed WACE but have:

  • not gained a sufficiently high ATAR to enter their preferred course; or
  • who have a strong employment history and / or a good educational background.

Aboriginal Orientation Course

Aboriginal Orientation Course prepares students for entry to most degree courses at UWA.

For more information, contact the School of Indigenous Studies.

Mature-age Access Program (UWA-MAP)

Mature-age applicants who do not have sufficient qualifications to be admitted under other mature-age pathways may be eligible for entry under the Mature-age Access Program.

Broadway UWA

This new alternative entry scheme allows students from designated schools to gain admission to the University if their ATAR is slightly below the usual minimum score.

Fairway UWA

Another new entry pathway, commencing in 2012, will allow selected students to gain entry to the University through participation in a program of support and activities throughout Year 12.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances have prevented you from getting the results you feel you are capable of, you may be able to lodge a request for special consideration for admission to UWA.

For WACE students, the basis of the appeal would usually be outside the scope of a Curriculum Council Sickness and Misadventure claim.

The applications are considered by UWA on an individual basis prior to each round of offers.

You should also submit a request for special consideration if you are not eligible for UWay, or if you have missed the UWay application deadline.
