Future Students

February 2008

Hello and welcome to the first issue of Prospects for 2008.

In this edition we look at some new courses for 2008, speak to past and present students and outline upcoming events.

Whether you are a student, parent or teacher we would like your input. Please send any comments or suggestions to prospects@uwa.edu.au.

challengeCampus Challenge
Are you in year 10, 11 or 12? Would you like to find out what being a university student is all about while having fun and making new friends? Campus Challenge is an interactive, residential camp for high school students held during the July school holidays. You will live in student accommodation and spend the days taking part in various hands-on academic activities at UWA. In the evenings there are all sorts of recreational and fun activities including roller hockey, movie nights and quiz nights.

ArtsCourse in Focus
Arts involves the study of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Humanities explore human civilisation and culture, while the Social Sciences take a more scientific approach to the study of human behaviour and organisation.  One of the best things about studying Arts is that it’s fun! With a selection of more than 30 subjects, you can design your course to suit your interests. Arts subjects provide the opportunity to learn and practise critical, analytical and creative thinking. These things are valued by many employers as one of the greatest benefits of a university education.

Google Earth

Google Earth
UWA students are in the running to be the CHAMPIONS of the EARTH... The Champions of Google Earth, that is. A team from UWA has been shortlisted in the top 3 among teams from Australia & New Zealand in the Google Earth 'Build your Campus in 3D Competition' and are heading to Sydney where the winner will be announced this month.

Robin

My Uni
In this issue we speak to Robin Chang who currently resides at UWA's Currie Hall and is studying Communication Studies. If you have a question for a UWA student or would like to see someone from a particular course interviewed then contact us at prospects@uwa.edu.au.

Motorsports

UWA Motorsports Back on Top
UWA Motorsport has taken out the title in the 7th annual Forumla SAE Australasia event held in December. They also received a special award for having the fastest car in the comp! If you have an interest in Motorsports or would like to find out more about how the UWA team went make sure you read on...

SKAOut There!
Out There! Exhibition will highlight UWA's excellence in science to future students. It will focus on the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope, one of the leading international science projects and the largest ground-based astronomy project in the world. The SKA radio telescope (which will cost around A$1.8 billion) will be up to 50 times more sensitive than present-day instruments and will revolutionise our understanding of the origin and evolution of the Universe.

So You Want to Be A ...
The study of law does more than create career opportunities - it allows the development of many important intellectual skills. Good lawyers possess proficient language skills, clear thought processes and the ability to resolve complex problems, which have both a legal and a human component. We talked to UWA graduate Andrew Cheung about his experiences as a law student and his career as a lawyer.

Climate StudiesNew Courses for 2008
UWA has two new science courses that are available for the first time in 2008. Climate Studies is the only course of its kind in Australia and will enable graduates to analyse and interpret the risks and opportunities associated with climate and climate change. Also available for the first time is a major in Science Communication, which will allow students to develop the skills required for a wide range of employment prospects including informal education and media relations.
