Future Students

Uway

School-leavers and mature-age TEE applicants who believe their academic achievements in Year 12 have been adversely affected by certain disadvantages may apply for special consideration through the university's UWay scheme.

UWay notionally adjusts a student's Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) according to the level of disadvantage they have experienced during Years 11 and/or 12.

Students who have applied through the UWay scheme may therefore be admitted to a course at the University based on their adjusted TER, even though their actual TER was below the published cut-off.

The disadvantages considered in UWay applications include:

  • rural isolation
  • lack of supportive study environment at home
  • having to care for family members
  • having to engage in excessive part-time employment to help with the family income
  • disruption of education due to frequent family relocation or difficult migrant passage
  • a period of illness, which is now over or abating
  • attending a school where very few students in Years 11 and 12 aspire to a tertiary education
  • bereavement

In addition to the above, students would also need to meet the University's requirement for:

  • Secondary Graduation
  • English Language Competence
  • Any course prerequisites

The Curriculum Council's Sickness and Misadventure Policy may take the following factors into consideration, which would not be taken into account through UWay:

  • On-going chronic or frequent illness
  • Missing school work due to transfer between schools or late commencement
  • Inability to complete tasks due to injury or physical disability
  • Family bereavement close to the time of sitting the Tertiary Entrance Examinations

UWay application forms have been sent all principals of all Western Australian secondary schools. UWay applications for all students close on Friday 28th September 2007.

For further information on the UWay scheme can be found at http://www.admissions.uwa.edu.au/undergrad/special/uway or by calling the Executive Officer (Admissions Committee) on (08) 6488 2477 or 1800 65 3050 (country callers).

Please note: Applying through the UWay scheme should not be confused with applying through the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC) for a place at UWA. All UWay applicants should follow the normal procedure for applying through TISC in addition to submitting a UWay application directly to the University
