Awards and Scholarships

The Fogarty Foundation, a philanthropic trust which supports excellence and encourages individuals to realise their potential, in partnership with the University, is offering the following scholarships and awards in 2008:

  • UWA - Fogarty Foundation City and Regional Scholarships - Up to four regional scholarships covering Student Contribution fees, ancillary costs and accommodation costs valued at approximately $50,000 - $80,000 each (approximately $13,000 per annum) and up to ten City Scholarships covering Student Contribution fees and $1,000 towards ancillary costs valued at approximately $20,000 - $30,000 each (approximately $5,000 per annum) are being offered to senior secondary students who show significant academic potential together with a strong sense of community involvement and responsibility.
  • Group of Eight Scholarships at UWA - Four scholarships valued at approximately $16,500 - $24,900 each ($4,162 per annum in 2008) will be awarded on academic merit to students who have performed well academically despite financial constraints.
  • Vice-Chancellor's Awards of Distinction - Five awards of $5,000 each will be made to students who demonstrate excellence not only in their academic studies, but also in some other aspect of their lives.
  • UWA Diversity and Merit Awards - Eighteen awards of $2,000 each will be made on merit to students coming from nominated equity groups.
  • UWA Excellence Awards Program - One award will be offered to each senior secondary school in the State, guaranteeing a place at UWA on the basis of school nomination rather than TEE results. The recipient should be the student identified by his/her school as most likely to succeed at university. Six Humanitarian Excellence Awards will be offered to students who have arrived in Australia on a Humanitarian Visa.

Nominations for ALL UWA Fogarty Foundation Awards and Scholarships are now open and close on Wednesday 28th November 2007.

Other Scholarships

The UWA SWANS Scheme, introduced by the University in 2005, is designed to assist students from low SES and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds to undertake a tertiary course at The University of Western Australia. In 2008 the University will offer up to 200 scholarships, valued at $2,162 per annum, to students commencing the first year of their first undergraduate degree.

Commonwealth Learning Scholarships (CLS) introduced in 2004 by the Commonwealth Government are intended to assist undergraduate students from low socio-economic (SES) backgrounds, Indigenous students and students from rural and regional areas with costs associated with higher education. Last year UWA awarded approximately 91 Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships( CECS), valued at $2120 for fours years and 64 Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships(CACS) valued at $4240 for up to four years.

As the Commonwealth Government is currently reviewing the CLS policy, final details of the 2008 CLS program are not yet available. Once available, detailed information on the 2008 Commonwealth Learning Scholarships and the application process will be placed on the UWA website at http://www.scholarships.uwa.edu.au/page/42207 An online application form will be accessible from this website. Please note it is likely applications will close around the end of November 2007.
