Land, Soil & Water

In this major, students are involved in the assessment and management of land, soil and water resources in the context of land use and climate change.

Land, Soil and Water is available as a major in the three-year Bachelor of Science degree.

Case studies, including field activities, demonstrate the complex interactions occurring in land and water systems.  The case studies include mine site rehabilitation, water use in forested catchments, pollution of waterways and urban lakes, and the downstream effects of agricultural practice.

Level 1 units serve as an introduction to the more detailed and specialised studies that may be taken in Levels 2 and 3.

Level 1
You will follow the Earth Science Foundation Package, involving choices from: Earth and Environmental Science, Chemistry, Maths, Physics or Biology.   Core units include Earth and Environment: Dynamic Planet and  Earth and Environment: Terrestrial Ecosystems.

Level 2
Core units include  Earth Surface Processes and Soils, and  Environmental Hydrology, plus units towards your second major.

Level 3
Core units include:  Land, Soil and Water Systems;   Land and Water: Case Studies in Land and Water Management; and a Land, Soil and Water Research Project. Plus either Environmental Geomorphology of Coasts and Rivers or Soil Biology and Plant Nutrition.  Or units toward your second major if you elect to do a double major.
