German

Studying German at UWA is not simply learning a language. It's an experience which will open your mind to a different culture, enrich you with history and give you the tools to do so much more.

German is the most widely spoken language in Europe. You'll have opportunities to study in Vienna, Berlin, Aachen or Freiburg or take part in the annual German play.

The German program offers units aimed at developing competence in German language, both spoken and written, and German culture.

We have developed a flexible, multi-streamed course catering for beginners, TEE students and native and near native speakers.

Our academic staff are specialists in the areas of identity and migration studies, educational technologies, linguistics and film studies.

German can be studied as a major within the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Arts (European Studies) or the Bachelor of Arts (Communication Studies). This includes combined courses which include these degrees.

It is possible to study a Diploma of Modern Languages concurrently with UWA undergraduate courses that do not otherwise allow for language study.

Level 1
GERMAN FOR BEGINNERS
is a language acquisition course to bring students with little or no previous knowledge of the language to TEE level by the end of the year. This is done using up-to-date language acquisition techniques in a natural learning environment, and our state-of-the-art Multimedia Centre.

POST-TEE GERMAN is designed for students with TEE German, or who have gained an equivalent knowledge of the language through other means. The first level of this stream focuses on language acquisition and cultural literacy. You will consolidate and extend your previous knowledge of spoken and written German and develop a sound knowledge of the language and culture.

NATIVE OR NEAR-NATIVE GERMAN is designed for students who are fluent in German. Through the study of selected texts and films you will be introduced to central issues in 20th century German, Austrian and Swiss literature and society from the beginning of the twentieth century until the end of the Second World War and from the “Stunde Null” until the present day.

Levels 2 and 3
In Levels 2 and 3 you will have the opportunity to undertake advanced language study and detailed study of the literature, society, and culture of the German-speaking lands of the 16th - 19th centuries. At the end of Level 3 you will be fluent in spoken German and will be able to read difficult texts and write German to a high standard.
