Currently studying a combined Science and Commerce degree at UWA

After graduating from The University of Western Australia Foundation Program at the end of 2006, I decided to study a combined Science and Commerce degree at UWA and it has been a wonderful experience so far!

I remembered just before I started first semester at uni, I had mixed feelings of excitement and fear about what may lay ahead. I am fortunate though that the knowledge and experience that I gained from UWAFP did help me to settle into life at university quickly. Taylors provided me with a comfortable learning environment where I could easily adapt to the university education system and the local lifestyle.

I have really been enjoying my studies in both Science and Commerce. I think that the secret to excelling at university is a combination of hard work and learning about something that you are interested in. However university is not all about studies! I have made new friends with local students and also students from around the world. It’s interesting to learn about different cultures and obviously studying at UWA allows me to continue to explore the Aussie culture even more.

Biochemistry and Chemistry are my favourite subjects. I especially enjoy understanding the chemical and biological pathways that occur in the human body. The good academic results I achieved in my first year provided me with a valuable opportunity of being a summer scholar in Dr Patrick Finnegan’s Plant Biochemistry lab. The six-week lab experience was wonderful! I got to do different experiments and tried out different test methods. During the process, I learnt lots of new techniques and further developed my problem solving skills. One of the most enjoyable things that I experienced was that I had the taste of what it’s like being a real scientist.

It has been great studying at UWA and I am looking forward to what lies ahead in both my university studies and career prospects.
