Future Students

Onshore applicants for Medicine and Dentistry

Further information

Closing dates

If you are studying in Australia in 2009, you must sit the ISAT to be considered for admission into medicine and dentistry in 2010. The International Centre will accept applications until 30 June 2009, but only if the applicant has sat the ISAT test.

Applications for places in second year or higher

Applicants currently enrolled in medicine programs at other universities and are seeking admission to second year or higher in the UWA program must follow the same application process. If successful, students may then apply to the Faculty for exemptions for previous studies.

If credit is sought, full unit descriptions and curriculum outlines should be submitted with the application.

This process is for applicants residing in Australia or New Zealand in 2009.

Academic results

Applicants must apply using the International Centre's undergraduate application form.

To meet the entry requirements for medicine and dentistry, applicants must have achieved the minimum entry score . Other tests will be assessed on an individual basis. A candidate must submit their final academic results for the year before a complete assessment of their application can be completed.

All students must provide evidence of English language competence.

Written selection test

Qualified applicants are required to sit a three hour, multiple-choice test, called the International Student Admissions Test (ISAT). Produced by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), the test aims to assess a candidate's critical and quantitative reasoning abilities considered important for coping with the intellectual demands of the UWA courses.

Information on the test format, results and sample questions can also be found at the ACER website.

Candidates must have taken the test by 30 June 2009 for their application to be considered by UWA.

Registration for the ISAT Test

Students may register online at the ACER website. In the online registration system, candidates are guided through a series of steps:

  1. Select the test centre of your choice from the list available.
  2. Select the test date of your choice for that test centre. Registrations close two calendar weeks before the test date.
  3. Check the cost of the test, which varies slightly between test centres. The cost of the centre that you have selected will be displayed.
  4. Complete your personal and contact details, and the universities to which you are applying.
  5. Pay the test fee by credit card. Alternative payment arrangements can be made if you do not have a credit card but please note that candidates will not be permitted to sit for the test if payment has not been received and registration is not confirmed.
  6. Check the receipt confirming payment and details of the test sitting has been sent by email.

All queries about the ISAT test should be directed to isat@acer.edu.au.

Applications and test results are forwarded to the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. The Faculty offers interviews to applicants who have exceeded the ISAT and academic thresholds. Thresholds are reviewed each year.

Structured interview

For onshore applicants, the interview is conducted in person at UWA by a two-person panel.

  • The purpose of the interview is to assess a range of personal attributes which are considered desirable in medical practitioners, such as motivation and commitment to study medicine and dentistry, ability to assist and work with others, ability to think critically, the ability to self-manage, social responsibility, perspectives of others and communication skills.
  • International applicants are normally interviewed in early-mid December.
  • International applicants must attend the interview in Perth, in person.

Once academic results are received, each applicant's selection is assessed on the three components: academic results; performance in the ISAT; and performance in the structured interview.

Offers for successful candidates will be made by the UWA International Centre between December 2009 and January 2010.
