Offshore applicants for Medicine and Dentistry

Further Information

Closing date

Closing date for applications is 30 June 2010. The International Centre will not accept applications if the candidate has not sat the ISAT test by 30 June 2010.

This process is for applicants residing outside Australia and New Zealand in 2010.

Step OneAcademic results

Applicants must apply using the International Centre's undergraduate application form.

To meet the entry requirements for medicine and dentistry, applicants must have achieved the minimum entry score .  A candidate must submit their final academic results for the year before a complete assessment of their application can be completed.

The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences will assess tertiary and other qualifications on a case-by-case basis. If credit is sought, full unit descriptions and curriculum outlines should be submitted with the application.

All applicants must provide evidence of English language competence.

Step TwoWritten selection test

Qualified applicants are required to sit a three hour, multiple-choice test, called the International Student Admissions Test (ISAT). Produced by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), the test aims to assess a candidate's critical and quantitative reasoning abilities considered important for coping with the intellectual demands of the UWA courses.

Information on the test format, results and sample questions can also be found at the ACER website.

  • The test is held in over 70 countries around the world, on all continents, and particularly in major cities in Asia and Australia.
  • There are up to 10 available test dates in most centres, between March and June.
  • Candidates must have taken the test by 30 June 2010 for their application to be considered by UWA.

Registration for the ISAT Test

Students may register online at the ACER website. In the online registration system, candidates are guided through a series of steps:

  1. Select the test centre of your choice from the list available.
  2. Select the test date of your choice for that test centre. Registrations close two calendar weeks before the test date.
  3. Check the cost of the test, which varies slightly between test centres. The cost of the centre that you have selected will be displayed.
  4. Complete your personal and contact details, and the universities to which you are applying.
  5. Pay the test fee by credit card. Alternative payment arrangements can be made if you do not have a credit card but please note that candidates will not be permitted to sit for the test if payment has not been received and registration is not confirmed.
  6. Check the receipt confirming payment and details of the test sitting has been sent by email.

All queries about the ISAT test should be directed to isat@acer.edu.au.

Applications and test results are forwarded to the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. The Faculty offers interviews to applicants who have exceeded the ISAT and academic thresholds. Thresholds are reviewed each year.

Step ThreeStructured interview

For offshore applicants, the Faculty conducts 'in person' interviews in Singapore and Malaysia in August and September.

The purpose of the interview is to assess the range of peronal attributes which are considered desirable in health practitioners, such as motivation and commitment to study medicine or dentistry, the ability to assist and work with others, the ability to think critically, ability to self-manage, social responsibility, perspectives of others and communication skills.

Offers

Offers will be made to successful candidates by the UWA International Centre between September 2010 and January 2011, following the interview, receipt of ISAT results and receipt of full academic results.
