Education

The Faculty of Education offers you two ways to qualify for a career in secondary school teaching

These are:

  1. The combined Bachelor of Education course allows you to obtain a Bachelor of Education while at the same time meeting the requirements for either the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Science or the Bachelor of Economics.
  2. The Graduate Diploma in Education is designed for students who have completed an appropriate degree and want to obtain a qualification to enable them to teach in WA secondary schools (http://www.education.uwa.edu.au/courses/postgraduate/graddiped).

The Bachelor of Music Education, qualifying you to teach music at both primary and secondary levels is offered by the School of Music.

Both the Graduate Diploma in Education and the Bachelor of Education combined courses prepare students for teaching at secondary level in:

  • Art+
  • English
  • Languages other than English (LOTE) - including French, German, Indonesian, Italian and Japanese
  • Mathematics
  • Music+
  • Physical and Health Education+
  • School Psychology*
  • Science - including Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Human Biology and Physics
  • Society and Environment - including Economics, Geography, History and Political and Legal Studies

+ only available through the Graduate Diploma in Education
* only available through the Graduate Diploma in Education to applicants who hold a BPsych.

In the combined course you will spend the first three levels studying Education units (as above), in parallel with studies for your other degree. By the end of the third level you will have completed the requirements for a Bachelor’s degree in either Arts, Economics or Science. You will participate in your first school teaching experience during the second level. The fourth and final level will be devoted exclusively to studies in Education. Combined course students complete 16 weeks of teaching practice in schools over four years.

Diploma students spend an intensive year which covers curriculum units designed to help you teach your chosen subjects. Other units introduce you to Teaching and Learning Perspectives, Aboriginal Education, historical and philosophical aspects of Education and research. Diploma students complete 12 weeks of teaching practice in schools.

Career opportunities

Completion of either the Bachelor of Education combined course or the Graduate Diploma in Education gives full professional status as a secondary school teacher in both government and non-government schools throughout Australia and in many countries overseas. The Faculty offers Masters and doctoral qualifications for those seeking promotion in the teaching profession or employment in tertiary institutions.
