Science Education

The future of Australia, in fact the future of our planet largely depends upon bright young minds studying science. Inspirational science teachers are a key component of that future.

This program has been primarily developed for those interested in a teaching career and is a response to national and local concerns about the state of physical science teaching in Australia.

Completion of this program, however, does not mean that secondary science teaching is the only option open to you. The BSc (Science Education) gives you a very solid knowledge base in the physical sciences, together with marketable communication skills.

If you do choose to apply for the Diploma of Education you will be very well prepared for the challenges associated with teaching.

Level 1
At Level 1 you will study one pair of units in physics, chemistry, mathematics and either biology or human biology. The specific units you study in physics, chemistry and mathematics will depend on what TEE subjects you have completed.

Level 2
At Level 2 you study Science Communication units that develop your written and verbal communication skills, as well as completing Level 2 requirements for a major in Physics or Chemistry and two units of Level 2 Mathematics.

Level 3
You will complete at least one major in Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics and continue to study Science Communication.

During your course you will be encouraged to participate in a peer-tutoring programme named SEEK. SEEK aims to improve science awareness among high school students and will enable you to put your Science Communication skills into practice as well as give you an early exposure to schools and an opportunity to foster your commitment to teaching.

Career opportunities

You will be extremely well prepared to enter teacher training. Given the strong demand, both locally, nationally and overseas for physical science teachers, you can be assured of employment. If you change your mind about teaching, having a strong knowledge base in the physical sciences together with communication skills will make you a very competitive for employment in government-funded organizations, museums, and science and technology industries.
