Mathematics and Statistics

Mathematics is a very broad term which covers study and invention in applied and pure mathematics, and in theoretical statistics, all for their own intrinsic interest.

As well, it covers applications of mathematics and statistics to quantitative modelling in the medical, natural, physical, and social sciences, as well as computing, engineering, the humanities, and so on.

Studying mathematical sciences at UWA is done by taking one or two of the seven majors offered by the School of Mathematics and Statistics:

Group A Majors:

  • Applied Mathematics
  • Mathematical Statistics
  • Pure Mathematics

Group B Majors:

  • Applied Statistics
  • Discrete Mathematics
  • Operations Research

Career opportunities

Mathematics graduates, and especially those with a background in Statistics and Applied Mathematics, are in a position to benefit from an expanding employment market. Prospective employers include: government departments, primary and secondary education, major corporations (particularly for consultants), computer manufacturers and service industries, mining companies and high-technology companies. Recent employers of UWA Computer and Mathematical Sciences graduates include: CSC Australia, Fujitsu Australia, Pivod Technologies, Ernst & Young, Lan West, RF Innovations, Health WA, Bungarra Software, Australis Pro, Unisoft, and the Defence Science & Technology Organisation. The inclusion of a second major from another discipline may also lead to a further enhancement of employment opportunities.
