Professor Graeme Martin

Professor Graeme Martin

After completing his undergraduate and graduate degrees in agriculture at UWA, Graeme Martin worked in France and Scotland before returning to his alma mater.

In 1986, he became a lecturer in what is now the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences and has since been promoted to the position of Professor. His research team includes post-doctoral fellows and doctoral students, mostly working on reproductive physiology and neurophysiology in sheep, emus, rats and dogs.

The sheep research focuses on the influences of environmental factors (for example, nutrition, pheromones) and on the reproductive system, particularly the brain mechanisms involved.

The emu research is designed to support the development of this sunrise industry in Australia.

Work on rats and dogs is aimed at the development of new approaches to contraception. The research is done in collaboration with a range of institutions, including the University of Queensland, the Institut Nationale de la Recherche Agronomique (France), the Roslin Institute (United Kingdom), the Keogh Institute for Medical Research (WA), Murdoch University, the Royal Veterinary College (London) and the Monash Medical Centre.

Much of his work has been presented to the public through radio, television and newspapers (at least 35 appearances over the past seven years). Outside the academic sphere, he competes in motor sport and hockey.
