Professor Peter Leedman

Peter Leedman devotes his time at the WA Institute of Medical Research, to breast and prostate cancers.

His is also a Winthrop Professor in the School of Medicine and Pharmacology.

"My laboratory is focused on investigating how hormones and growth factors regulate the expression of key therapeutic targets in breast and prostate cancer.

"In particular, we are studying the molecular mechanisms in the regulation of androgen receptor (AR), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGF-R), erbB-2 gene expression, as well as how androgens and estrogens transactivate signals via a novel RNA coactivator, SRA," he explains.

"The lab has particular expertise in RNA-protein interactions, and each of the projects, focuses on novel RNA-protein interactions key to either a transcriptional process or post-transcriptional (mRNA decay) pathway.

"The aim of the work is to characterise the functional, structural (through a close collaboration with Matthew and Jackie Wilce at the UWA Structural Biology Centre) and therapeutic potential of these interactions and develop novel small molecule inhibitors of tumor growth based on the findings. Positions are available for PhDs."
