English language competency for higher degrees by research


Applicants for a research higher degree must satisfy the requirements for English language competency set down by the Board of the Graduate Research School from time to time.

At the discretion of the Board, applicants may be required to demonstrate satisfactory performance, as prescribed by the Academic Board, in an approved test of English before being admitted to the University.

All English test results must normally have been obtained within the last two years.

Please note that higher scores are required for all higher degree by research local and international scholarship applicants, and applicants in certain faculties, as indicated below.

Minimum requirements
Qualification through WA TEE or equivalent Pass in English, English Literature, or English as a Second Language
GCE Ordinary Level English C6 or higher
TOEFL (Paper-Based total) 570 with a Test of Written English (TWE) of no less than 4.5
Scholarship applicants require 580, with 45 in the Test of Spoken English (TSE) and 4.5 in the Test of Written English (TWE)
IBT TOEFL (Internet-based test score) 90 with 22 for writing, and no other band less than 20
Scholarship applicants require 95, with 22 for reading and listening, 24 for speaking, and 23 for writing
IELTS 6.5 (no lower than 6.0 for speaking and listening, and no lower than 6.5 for reading and writing)
Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English C pass
Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English B grade
CELT Bridging Course Overall score B+ (75%), with B+ (75%) for reading and writing, and B (70%) for listening & speaking
Other Other qualifications assessed on an individual basis

Note: Australian government visa regulations require higher English scores for applicants from some countries.

Higher English scores are also required for admission to Higher Degrees in some faculties at UWA: Law requires an overall IELTS of 7.0 with 7.5 in Reading and Writing; Education and Dentistry require an overall IELTS score of 7.0, with a minimum of 6.5 in Reading and Writing.
