Introduction

A major in Zoology will introduce you to the fascinating diversity of animals, their interactions with each other and their environments. You will develop an understanding of the forces that have shaped animal groups into highly structured ecosystems and communities. Zoology is a core biological discipline underpinning current interest and research in conservation biology and marine science.

Course description, features and facilities

A Zoology major provides you with the opportunity to study animals and their habitats, including Western Australia's exciting fauna. These habitats are diverse, and range from deserts through to temporary wetlands and rainforests. Zoologists discover the solutions to the problems presented by these habitats. These solutions reflect the evolutionary relationships of the animals. Identifying and understanding the solutions involves studies in anatomy, physiology, reproduction, behaviour, community ecology and molecular genetics. The major integrates theory with practical (both field and laboratory) studies utilising as examples many of the animals and ecosystems from the diverse state of Western Australian. Teaching methods consist of lectures from leading experts, weekly practical and laboratory classes and tutorials. This major includes two field trips of two days. The Faculty is well equipped for teaching and research in zoology and our teaching is supported by the world class research of the Centre for Evolutionary Biology, the Oceans Institute, and the Centre of Excellence in Natural Resource Management.

Student profile – Toby Travers

The Zoology major at UWA gives you a fantastic insight into evolutionary processes throughout the animal kingdom. You also gain an in-depth view into the identification of species and understanding the selective pressures that have forged these evolutionary pathways. There is a great flexibility within the course that allows you to study Zoology alongside other units, or even a completely different major.

The experienced lecturers and the friends you make combined with the University grounds, abundant facilities and its location on the shores of the Swan River make UWA a great place to study. I will finish this course full of confidence that I will be able to enter a position in any field relating to Zoology at the completion of my studies.

Structure

UWA's streamlined course structure allows you to pursue studies in a wide range of areas and to take one or two majors in your degree. Your second major can be from a similar field to your first (degree-specific) major, or from a different area or degree entirely.

As well as the units specified in your major, you will study broadening units outside your main area of study and may be able to take a number of elective subjects as well.

Career opportunities

Zoology graduates are employed in private sector companies (such as fisheries, aquaculture, resources sector), in government departments (for example, Environment and Conversation, State Fisheries), in public agencies (such as museums, the Perth Zoo), in environment and conservation research agencies (CSIRO), while others join academic institutions.

Further study opportunities

Students with a Zoology major can pursue further studies at Honours level and/or at Masters level. The Master of Science can be done either by Coursework (for example, Zoology, Conservation Biology, Animal Science, Biotechnology) or by Research (Thesis and Coursework; in say, Ecology and Evolution, Neurobiology).

Please note: to complete this major within the Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) will require a minimum ATAR of 98 (or equivalent).

English competency

University study demands strong English language competency. To be eligible for admission to a undergraduate program at UWA, you must demonstrate satisfactory performance in a UWA-approved test of English. This is the case even if English is your first language.

The minimum requirement is a scaled score of 50 or more in WACE English, Literature or English as an Additional Language/Dialect achieved at Stage 2 or Stage 3 – or an equivalent level of achievement in an interstate or international qualification.

Advanced standing

If you have undertaken prior tertiary study within the last five years, you may be eligible for advanced standing (credit and/or exemption).

Applications for advanced standing are assessed upon acceptance of any offer of admission made by the University.
