Introduction

This course is the study of the German language and its various cultures. It teaches students high levels of competence in the German language through speaking, writing, listening and reading.

Course description, features and facilities

This major offers a wide perspective on German culture as it considers the culture and history of German-speaking people, not only in Germany, Austria and Switzerland but across the globe.

Social history and culture are studied from the many centuries of German literary tradition prose, poetry and drama, music, film and advertising.

The major caters for students at all levels, from beginners through to native speakers.

Student profile

Student profile – Peter Simojoki

Studying a German major at UWA has been a very rewarding experience. I decided to study German after travelling to Germany for several months previously. German Studies has not only allowed me to learn a language and discover a new culture, but also to spend a year abroad on exchange.

The smaller sized language classes at UWA create a more personalised learning experience, where lectures say hello in the corridor rather than being distant figures at the front of the lecture theater. During my time at UWA, especially in the confusion of first year, I always had the opportunity to go to my lecturers with any problems or queries. The German Faculty also provided indispensible information on scholarships, study abroad and work experience opportunities throughout my studies.

Structure

UWA's streamlined course structure allows you to pursue studies in a wide range of areas and to take one or two majors in your degree. Your second major can be from a similar field to your first (degree-specific) major, or from a different area or degree entirely.

As well as the units specified in your major, you will study broadening units outside your main area of study and may be able to take a number of elective subjects as well.

Career opportunities

European language graduates are well qualified for careers in the diplomatic services, teaching and training, interpreting and translating, as well as a range of careers in travel, hospitality, publishing, theatre, commerce, manufacturing, law and international relations. Knowledge of a foreign language is particularly helpful for career prospects in international banking, journalism and communications, medical areas, music and the arts. Employment opportunities are also found in the public sector.

Please note: to study this major within the Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) will require a minimum ATAR of 98 (or equivalent).

English competency

University study demands strong English language competency. To be eligible for admission to a undergraduate program at UWA, you must demonstrate satisfactory performance in a UWA-approved test of English. This is the case even if English is your first language.

The minimum requirement is a scaled score of 50 or more in WACE English, Literature or English as an Additional Language/Dialect achieved at Stage 2 or Stage 3 – or an equivalent level of achievement in an interstate or international qualification.

Advanced standing

If you have undertaken prior tertiary study within the last five years, you may be eligible for advanced standing (credit and/or exemption).

Applications for advanced standing are assessed upon acceptance of any offer of admission made by the University.
