Course description, features and facilities

This major includes units in the literary history of Britain, America, Australia and postcolonial societies; creative writing and theatre; popular culture and film; and critical theory. The emphasis is on developing an understanding of how we communicate and of diverse forms of representation across time, culture and media.

Student profile

Student profile – Temily Cao

As far back as I can remember, I have been a book addict. Growing up, there was nothing better than getting completely engrossed in a good novel, and it was UWA’s reputation for having the best English department which drew me here. I am now in my third year of uni, and my course has managed to surpass even my (extremely high) expectations. The best thing about doing an English major is that studying never feels like work; the units are diverse and fascinating, and learning is interesting rather than a chore.

This course forces you to broaden the repertoire of what you read – I have been exposed to novels I never would never have picked off the shelf, but can’t imagine not knowing now.

Structure

UWA's streamlined course structure allows you to pursue studies in a wide range of areas and to take one or two majors in your degree. Your second major can be from a similar field to your first (degree-specific) major, or from a different area or degree entirely.

As well as the units specified in your major, you will study broadening units outside your main area of study and may be able to take a number of elective subjects as well.

English and Cultural Studies graduates are highly successful in obtaining a wide range of jobs—from teaching to management, from journalism and advertising to the public service— and in all aspects of the cultural life of our society. Please note: to study this major within the Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) will require a minimum ATAR of 98 (or equivalent).

English competency

University study demands strong English language competency. To be eligible for admission to a undergraduate program at UWA, you must demonstrate satisfactory performance in a UWA-approved test of English. This is the case even if English is your first language.

The minimum requirement is a scaled score of 50 or more in WACE English, Literature or English as an Additional Language/Dialect achieved at Stage 2 or Stage 3 – or an equivalent level of achievement in an interstate or international qualification.

Advanced standing

If you have undertaken prior tertiary study within the last five years, you may be eligible for advanced standing (credit and/or exemption).

Applications for advanced standing are assessed upon acceptance of any offer of admission made by the University.
