If you are interested in journalism, the media, film making, multimedia, the web, computer games, and all forms of communication, then this major is for you.

Course description, features and facilities

What we know of the world, and how we act in it, is critically related to our use of communication technologies, from language to screen, and from text to social networks. This major provides you with practical communication skills along with essential theoretical knowledge and includes training in the use of the latest digital multimedia technology. Students often work collaboratively on creative projects which allow them the opportunity to gain experience in communication technology and media production while critically reflecting on the relationship between communication, media and culture.

Student profile – Rose Daniels

When I say to people I’m studying Communications they often don’t know what that is, so I tell them that I study the theory and practice of communication.

The topics we study in communications are really interesting as they are about things that you experience everyday, such as advertising, news and television. The course changes the way you think and challenges your assumptions about the world.

Communications Studies also has a lot of practical components, such as creating a website, and using Photoshop. One of the highlights has been learning to use filming equipment and then edit the footage to create a video portrait.

Structure

 

UWA's streamlined course structure allows you to pursue studies in a wide range of areas and to take one or two majors in your degree. Your second major can be from a similar field to your first (degree-specific) major, or from a different area or degree entirely.

As well as the units specified in your major, you will study broadening units outside your main area of study and may be able to take a number of elective subjects as well.

Please note: to complete this major within the Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) will require a minimum ATAR of 98 (or equivalent).

English competency

University study demands strong English language competency. To be eligible for admission to a undergraduate program at UWA, you must demonstrate satisfactory performance in a UWA-approved test of English. This is the case even if English is your first language.

The minimum requirement is a scaled score of 50 or more in WACE English, Literature or English as an Additional Language/Dialect achieved at Stage 2 or Stage 3 – or an equivalent level of achievement in an interstate or international qualification.

Advanced standing

If you have undertaken prior tertiary study within the last five years, you may be eligible for advanced standing (credit and/or exemption).

Applications for advanced standing are assessed upon acceptance of any offer of admission made by the University.
