Graduate profile

Kim Axworthy

South East Asia Program Coordinator, Engineers Without Borders Australia (EWB)

Leaving school, I really wasn’t too sure what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I was keen to do something worthwhile that benefited people and the environment, and I was good at maths and science. After a year of studying a general science degree at UWA, I discovered engineering.

Engineering is the application of science – a way to provide people and communities with access to the knowledge, resources and technology they need to keep themselves healthy, happy and productive.

I decided to swap to studies in engineering at UWA which I found interesting, challenging and practical. I am fascinated by the human side of engineering which has led me to a fantastic career with the non-profit organisation Engineers Without Borders Australia (EWB).

I am now EWB’s South East Asia Program Coordinator and travel regularly to oversee our projects in East Timor, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos.  We work with local organisations to build their technical capacities to help improve the quality of life of disadvantaged communities, through projects in water and sanitation, renewable energy, information technology, construction, and disability access.

Engineering as a career can be incredibly varied – from highly technical design work to people- or environment-focused project planning. Studying Engineering Science at UWA will expose you to many of these opportunities, and challenge you to be a broad-minded problem solver, with a strong practical and technical knowledge base.
